Arkadi hotel is located close to Crete’s most recognisable landmarks, the venetian harbor of Chania. Opened in the 1980s and renovated in 2021, it has been an environment of comfort to both business and leisure travelers. Collaborating with AVW Architecture studio, we designed a modern and minimal identity that pays homage to the folk embroidery of the 19th century Crete, a tradition that set the foundation for modern creation and was tied to the life and customs of the people on the island. Merging past and present, the resulting identity contains clear imagery of folklore cretan embroidery specimens, with unique elements that help the hotel stand out. The folk elements, while subtle and elegant, are redefined in a pixelated style that deconstructs and redefines the Cretan heritage, in a new and contemporary take on traditional decorative arts.
